I recently watched this new music video by rap artist 50 Cent. I would be a liar if I said I like it, but that's probably because I view it from the perspective of a white, middle class female. I didn't grow up in a ghetto in the US, so I have difficulty relating to this new music video. Most of this new music video was shot in a prison.Near the beginning, the prison warden throws dog bowls full of what looks like milk under the doors of the prison cells. This implies that prison inmates in the US receive worse treatment than dogs, and I agree that the judicial system in this country needs revision. The lyrics to the song in this new music video are full of violence. One of the lines to the song warns, "Don't even look at me wrong when I come through the 'hood." Perhaps I would have a better understanding of this type of threat if I had lived that reality. While I didn't grow up with a sliver spoon in my mouth, I certainly didn't face the same hardship as rapper 50 Cent. This music seems aggressive to me only because it reflects a way of life I have been lucky enough to avoid.
